On 7th September, 2017, Indian National Congress through its official party handle @INCIndia posted a tweet claiming that while their party was fighting trolls, PM Modi was igniting trolls.
Congress’s claim that it was fighting trolls was apparently for public consumption because from the day Narendra Modi has become the Prime Minster, party’s senior leaders, State units and youth organisation handles have regularly posted abusive tweets against PM Modi, Smriti Irani and other leaders of BJP. Congress has never taken any action against such leaders, State units and the youth organisations of their party. The fact that Congress had no intention of controlling its abusive trolls was proven correct the very next day by party’s senior leader Mr. Digvijay Singh a two time CM of Madhya Pradesh, sitting Rajya Sabha MP and mentor of the party’s Vice President Rahul Gandhi. Digvijay Singh was soon followed by Mr. Manish Tewari former Union Minister and currently the National Spokesperson.
A few days back @yuvadesh, official twitter handle of Indian Youth Congress’s online magazine, which is followed by Congress party’s official handle @INCIndia; posted a meme which made a derogatory and personal attack on PM Narendra Modi. The said meme suggested that PM Modi was not fit to be a Prime Minister but was only fit to pursue his earlier profession of a tea vendor. This meme is reminiscent of comments made by Senior Congress leader Mr. Mani Shankar Aiyer a few months before 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
This meme was condemned across the political spectrum. The precise message this meme wanted to convey was aptly captured by a twitter handle @PMuvacha through his tweet:
Due to all round condemnation of this meme, Amrinder Singh Raja, the National President of Indian National Youth Congress tendered an apology. Ironically, Amrinder Singh Raja had himself in the past posted a highly derogatory tweet against the Union Minister Smriti Irani for which he has never apologised.
Similarly on a debate on Times Now on this subject, Tehseen Poonawala, the brother in law of Robert Vadra, tendered an apology on the behalf of Indian Youth Congress. Like Amrinder Singh Raja, Tehseen Poonawala has also in the past, posted abusive, highly derogatory and sexist tweets against PM Modi and Smriti Irani and till date never apologised for the same.
Finally under the directions from Amrinder Singh Raja, the twitter handle @yuvadesh deleted the derogatory meme and apologised.
However, this was not the first time @yuvadesh had posted a highly derogatory meme against PM Modi. In the past too it had posted several derogatory memes against PM Modi attacking him on his married life and his previous profession as a tea vendor.
By asking those very leaders who themselves have posted abusive and derogatory tweets against PM Modi and Smriti Irani to apologise on the behalf of @yuvadesh and against whom Congress has, not surprisingly, never taken any action for their misdeeds, a loud and clear message is sent by Congress that its trolls will continue to abuse PM Modi and his ministers irrespective of their publicly stated claims saying otherwise.
It is not only handles like @yuvadesh, @RajaBrar_INC or @tehseenp which have posted abusive and derogatory tweets against PM Modi and Smriti Irani but there are hosts of senior Congress leaders, right from Rahul Gandhi to other senior leaders like Digvijay Singh, Manish Tewari, Sanjay Nirupam, Sanjay Jha et al., who have done the same. Even the official handles of the Congress party’s state units viz. @INCHimachal, @INCPuducherry and @MH_pyc have been party to abusive and filthy tweets.
Well, it is high time that Congress walks the talk and takes stern action against party’s senior leaders including its Vice President and the heir apparent Rahul Gandhi, Digvijay Singh, Manish Tewari, Amrinder Singh Brar, Sanjay Nirupam, Sanjay Jha, Tehseen Poonawala et al., state party units and Indian National Youth Congress for posting abusive and highly derogatory tweets against PM Modi and Smriti Irani. Congress party failing to do so will most certainly raise doubts on the integrity of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, as ultimately the buck stops at Sonia Gandhi’s door step, given that she is the President of Indian National Congress. The biggest irony of institutionalized Congressi trolls is the fact that while they spew misogynist filth unapologetically, they have the temerity to talk of woman empowerment. Simply having a woman figure head as its party president, is no sign of a progressive mind-set. The hypocrisy of Congress on this front has been exposed by its abusive troll machinery, which runs down people and institutions, in the name of FOE.
